Where to stay
Early July is peak season on the Baltic coast, and the Warnemünder Woche usually runs at the same time. Book early, with free cancellation.
Search every site
Solid tags are filled in automatically. Dashed tags aren't supported in that site's search links, so set them once the site opens. Prices, availability and distances are shown by the booking sites themselves; this page never books anything. Early July is peak season on the Baltic coast, so book with free cancellation as early as you can.
Camp at the event site
Campers, motorhomes and caravans can stay at the naval base Marinestützpunkt Hohe Düne, next to the marina. You walk to your boat, and you're on the same side of the river as the race office.
Good to know
- Arriving by roadThe site is on the east bank. Use the Warnow tunnel or drive round via Rostock. Don't follow a sat-nav through Warnemünde town: there's no road bridge across the river mouth.
- Military siteThe base is an active naval facility. Expect access checks, carry ID, and follow the staff's instructions on where you may walk, photograph or fly drones.

Getting here
The race village is at Hohe Düne, on the east bank of the Warnow. Warnemünde town is on the west bank. A short passenger ferry links the two.
By air

By train
Long-distance and regional trains run to Rostock Hauptbahnhof from Hamburg and Berlin, both about 2 to 2½ hours. From Rostock Hbf, the S-Bahn line S1 runs to Warnemünde in about 20 minutes, several times an hour.
From Warnemünde station it's a short walk to the ferry across to Hohe Düne. Plan your connections on bahn.com. The Deutschlandticket is valid on the S-Bahn and regional trains.
By car and with a boat trailer
From Hamburg and Lübeck take the A20, from Berlin the A19. Both lead to Rostock. Hohe Düne is on the east side of the river, so don't drive into Warnemünde town: there's no road bridge across the river mouth.
By ferry
Rostock's international ferry port is on the east bank of the Warnow, a short drive from Hohe Düne. Teams from Scandinavia can arrive with their trailer directly:

Getting around locally
The passenger ferry between Warnemünde and Hohe Düne crosses the river mouth in a few minutes. For racing days, bring a bike: it's the easiest way between the marina, Markgrafenheide and the ferry.

Warnemünde
A former fishing village at the mouth of the Warnow, today Rostock's seaside district and one of the best-known resorts on the German Baltic coast.
The town
Warnemünde has one of the widest sandy beaches on the Baltic, a promenade lined with hotels, and the Alter Strom: the old harbour channel with fishing boats, fish-sandwich stalls and captains' houses. Its landmarks sit side by side at the harbour entrance: the white lighthouse and the Teepott, a building with a sweeping concrete-shell roof.
Cruise ships are part of the skyline. Warnemünde is one of Germany's busiest cruise ports, and a big ship in the river mouth is a normal sight during a race week.
Warnemünder Woche
Since 1938, the first full week of July has belonged to the Warnemünder Woche: nine days of racing on the Bay of Mecklenburg and a summer festival on land. The 2026 edition brought 386 boats and 774 sailors onto nine course areas, from youth dinghies to the offshore race around Bornholm.
On land, the week opens with the "Niege Ümgang", a traditional costumed parade through the town. Then come dragon-boat and washtub races on the Alter Strom, beach handball, shanty choirs, live music every day on the stage by the lighthouse, and fireworks over the Baltic to close.
After Kiel Week and Travemünde Week it is one of Germany's biggest regatta events. The J/22 Worlds fall in the same week, so expect a busy, festive town and book early.
A short history
- 1323The city of Rostock buys the fishing village at the river mouth to secure its access to the sea.
- 1800sSummer guests arrive and Warnemünde grows into a seaside resort.
- 1886The railway from Rostock reaches Warnemünde.
- 1898The lighthouse is completed. It still guards the harbour entrance.
- 1938The first Warnemünder Woche is held.
- 1968The Teepott opens, with its shell roof by engineer Ulrich Müther.
- 1990sAfter reunification Warnemünde develops into a major cruise port and holiday resort.
- 2019Warnemünde hosts the J/22 World Championship for the first time.
- 2027The J/22 Worlds return to Hohe Düne.
The Worlds have been here before
Warnemünde hosted the J/22 World Championship in 2019. Crews from across the class raced on the Bay of Mecklenburg in waves, sunshine and a proper Baltic breeze, and many of them are coming back. 2027 is the fleet's second World Championship off Hohe Düne.

The Game
Sail a virtual race off Warnemünde against 25 boats, with right-of-way rules, wind shifts and gusts. Pick a team or enter your own boat, choose a difficulty level, or start with a practice round.
The course
2 laps: Start → windward mark (to port) → offset mark → gate. On lap 1, round a gate mark and sail the next beat. On lap 2, sail through the gate to the finish.

Rules in the game

The game simplifies the rules. At the real Worlds, penalties follow the Racing Rules of Sailing and the Sailing Instructions.

Vom 4. bis 10. Juli 2027 treffen sich die besten J/22-Teams der Welt in Warnemünde. Die Weltmeisterschaft steht im Rampenlicht der Warnemünder Woche, die zuletzt rund 700.000 Besucher anzog (2025) und zu den größten Regattaveranstaltungen Deutschlands zählt. Wir suchen Partner, die diese Woche finanziell oder mit Sachleistungen möglich machen und dabei genau die Menschen erreichen, die jeden Tag mit Segelausrüstung zu tun haben.
From 4 to 10 July 2027 the best J/22 teams in the world meet in Warnemünde. The Worlds take centre stage at the Warnemünder Woche, which most recently drew around 700,000 visitors (2025) and is one of Germany's biggest regatta events.
